Get Involved
The America Reads and Counts program at UNC-Chapel Hill uses students who receive Federal Work-Study awards. Undergraduate work-study students can work as tutors; graduate work-study students can work as coach mentors.
The America Reads and Counts program places tutors with children in grades preK-8th grade in area schools. Tutors receive thorough initial training and have follow-up sessions throughout the year to learn effective tutoring techniques.
America Reads
- Tutor children in grades preK-5 in area schools
- Write lesson plans for each tutoring session
- Participate in informational meetings and training sessions
- Acquire effective literacy tutoring techniques
- Have fun and meet new people
America Counts
- Gain a better understanding of mathematics instruction.
- Routinely receive constructive feedback, assistance, and support in developing greater skills and knowledge to tutor students in mathematics.
- Feel great about contributing to the education of a middle school student!
